FEAR 3 Review

FEAR 3 Review
Disclaimer : I was Only able to play Point Man's story line so the Paxton Fettel Story line and the Multiplayer sections will not be included in this review.

When FEAR 3 was initially announced, I wasn't very excited for it. I didn't really like the first FEAR and I never played the sequel. I felt like Monolith should've been spending their time on making a sequel to Condemned 2 rather than a sequel to FEAR 2. When I heard Monolith was pulled off the project, I was surprised. But recently, Onlive was having a Free to Play weekend for FEAR 3 and multiple other games. I felt that it would give me something to do so I decided to play it.

The Story
FEAR 3 starts off pretty cool, the main Protagonist from the original FEAR, Point Man, is being interrogated in some prison cell while you see the antagonist from the original FEAR, Paxton Fettel, slowly walking up behind one of the guards holding point man prisoner. What you see next is awesomely gruesome and I won't spoil it for you. The story centers around Alma, the little ghost girl and mother of Point Man and Paxton, is pregnant and Point Man and Paxton have to put aside their differences so they can stop Alma from giving birth. But honestly, that's pretty much all I can remember from the story. The story is extremely forgettable which is a shame since it had some great potential to grow.

The Looks
FEAR 3, in my opinion, looks great. I've heard alot of people talk about how the graphics are sub par but I personally thought they were really cool looking. FEAR 3 doesn't have the realistic graphics that the first two FEAR games had, it has almost a comic book look to it that I really liked.

The Gameplay
The Gameplay of FEAR 3 is it's best asset, FEAR 3's gameplay is extremely fun and addictive. While it looks like any other FPS game out there, it has a cover system that you'll rely on heavily and it also has great melee attacks and the series staple, Slow Motion Shooting. Hiding behind cover, slowing time down to get a few headshots, then popping out of cover, then slide kicking 3 enemies at the same time has never been more fun. While most of the gameplay is extremely fun, there is one major drawback... Difficulty Spikes. You could be having a blast taking down a bunch of soldiers in slo-mo, then all the sudden two huge super soldiers that can teleport and have electricity powers pop out of nowhere and kill you almost immediately. While I'm fine with a hard boss every now and then, moments like the one I described pop up usually when you're extremely unprepared. Another problem the game has is telling you what exactly to do. At one point in the game, I had to wait for a very slow moving garage door to open while fighting off a bunch of creatures. When the door finally opened,  I ran in expecting all the creatures to leave... but they didn't. I died multiple times fighting off the creatures waiting for something to happen. Never once in the fifteen minutes I was fighting the creatures off, did the game tell me to go press the same button again to close the door. While I can't necessarily call this a problem but, FEAR 3 is never at any point scary. I should also mention that after you beat the story line as Point Man, you can replay the game as Paxton Fettel. Sadly, I was not able to play as Paxton since I only had the game for three days. It also had Multiplayer, but once again, I was unable to play it.

In Conclusion
FEAR 3 is a really fun game. The story is flat and the gameplay can get annoying sometimes but the fact is, It's Fun. It's a shame I was only able to play only 1/3 of the game.

Pros
+ Fun Gameplay
+ Cool Art style
+Some Interesting Characters
+ Mech Suits

Cons
- Forgettable Story line
- Multiple Difficulty Spikes

Score
7.5 out of 10
